Agriculture Committee holds hearing: Past, Present, and Future of SNAP: The Means to Climbing the Economic Ladder

Today, the House Agriculture Committee continued its full-scale review of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as the Past, Present, and Future of SNAP, by examining the tools that are available to help SNAP recipients climb the economic ladder. Members of the committee heard from a panel of witnesses who have extensive on-the-ground experience working with individuals to help them enter, re-enter, and remain in the workforce.

House Passes CFTC Reauthorization Bill

Today, the House passed H.R. 2289, the Commodity End-Users Relief Act, by a vote of 246-171. Introduced by House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (TX-11), Rep. Austin Scott (GA-8), and Rep. David Scott (GA-13), this bill reauthorizes the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which has operated without Congressional authorization for nearly two years.

House Passes Three Agricultural Measures

Today, House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (R-TX) issued a statement after the House passed the following bills: H.R. 2051, the Mandatory Price Reporting Act, H.R. 2088, the United States Grain Standards Act Reauthorization Act, and H.R. 2394, the National Forest Foundation Reauthorization Act. All three bills passed by voice vote.

Support for COOL repeal keeps growing

Today, the COOL Reform Coalition sent Congress a letter to express strong support for H.R. 2393, the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Amendments Act of 2015. House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (R-TX) introduced the bipartisan bill, along with several of his colleagues, and the House Agriculture Committee approved the bill on May 20, 2015.

Support for Commodity End-User Relief Act

Tomorrow, the House will consider H.R. 2289, the Commodity End-User Relief Act. Introduced by House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (TX-11), Rep. Austin Scott (GA-8), and Rep. David Scott (GA-13), this bipartisan bill will reauthorize and improve the operations of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as well as ensure robust markets, consumer protections, and a balanced approach to regulations impacting job creators. Committee on Agriculture Reviews Agricultural Subsidies in Foreign Countries

Today, the House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing to review rising foreign agriculture subsidies. Members of the Committee heard from Dr. Darren Hudson, Director of the International Center for Agricultural Competitiveness (ICAC) at Texas Tech University, and Craig A. Thorn, partner at DTB Associates, LLP in Washington, DC. Hudson and Thorn testified concerning the scope and nature of foreign agriculture subsidies, the harm they cause U.S. farmers and ranchers, the U.S. economy, and jobs, and the need for the U.S. government to ensure that foreign competitors are brought into compliance with their trade commitments.

Subcommittee Reviews the Financial Health of Farm Country

Today, Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee’s General Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee, held a public hearing to review the financial health of farm country. With significantly lower commodity prices, net farm income has decreased substantially over the past two years. This impacts not only farmers and ranchers but also farm equipment dealers, agricultural input suppliers, main street businesses, and local lending institutions—essentially all of rural America. Members of the subcommittee heard from a panel of witnesses who highlighted the current conditions farmers and ranchers are facing as well as the importance of maintaining a strong farm safety net.

House Committee on Agriculture Chairman K. Michael Conaway (TX-11) and Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee Chairman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) released the following statement in response to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers final “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) rule. This rule further obscures the original intent of the Clean Water Act (CWA) by significantly expanding waters subject to federal jurisdiction.
